When Will Wright, the eighteen year old son of a small-town Arkansas sheep herder in 1905, begins reading his mother’s journal, he is inspired by its startling content to start putting his own experiences to paper for posterity. An unsophisticated but principled young man, Will is becoming increasingly aware of the hatred that exists in the world. When he begins his own journal, Will can’t know what events are to take place in the next five years – from his mother’s battle with a life threatening illness, to his embarrassments of learning how to be in love for the first time, to witnessing Charlie’s fate at the hands of the bigoted townspeople. While part of him wishes the pain in those pages didn’t exist, he knows that the original purpose for keeping the journal has been realized - to show his kin how he became the man he is. He will probably never go back through and read again the pages he’s written, but someday, someone will, and they will see that along with the hurt, Will’s life had been one that knew true joy, absolute love, and undying friendship

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It kept me riveted, and I didn't want to put it down. It spans four years in the life of Will Wright in the early 1900s as his story unfolds through his journal. A lot can change in four years, and it certainly did for Will and his family - some changes that you never get over, but have to live with. I laughed, I had tears, felt love for some characters and hate for others. Shelly Brimley is a very talented writer, and I hope she is writing another novel.Product details

Take Me to the Willow edition by Shelly Brimley Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Well written historically accurate. Would enjoy a sequel. Hard to put down. Have tissue ready. Would recommend to ages 13 and up.
Wonderful characters and a well developed story. Hard to put down. A book that will make you feel every emotion. I laughed, I cried, and loved the gems of wisdom and emotion scattered throughout the book.
Well written and well developed characters made for a very engaging read. Once I started reading, I didn't want to stop. I was actually disappointed when it ended, because I wanted to find out what happened to everyone as the years went on!
I absolutely loved this book!! The author has such a gift of explaining life's situations. I felt the pain so vividly as the characters did in the book. I have a greater appreciation of the early times with the people who supported each other without any prejudices, only love for each other.
I look forward to more books by Shelly Brimley!!
The greatest strength of Take Me to the Willow is found in its engaging dialog. Will Wright’s conversations with his parents, best friend, and love interest, are absolutely endearing. The overall story is believable and appropriately heart-wrenching for the time period. If you enjoy a character driven historical fiction novel, then this book is for you.
I adored the main character perspective, it gave a fresh insight to the setting, his voice is genuine and authentic. Written as journal entries, we learn about love, bigotry and family secrets through the eyes of Will Wright. He covers a wide range of emotions and experiences covering the first few years of his adulthood and because he means them to be for posterity, his reasons for writing are very clear. The story was a little slow to start but once I got to know Will and his family I was pulled into his life and didn't want to leave. Excellent read.
I have no one to blame but the author for these tired, tear filled eyes! Eyes that stayed up way beyond my bedtime because they couldn't stop feeding off the words of this book until they had closure. I fell in love with each character in a way where their triumphs brought a true smile to my face and their tribulations made me weep. Take me to the Willows is an emotionally exquisite read. I dearly hope the author continues the story and blesses us all with a sequal... My mind is left wondering what becomes of my beloved storybook "friends".
