I'm a bit late to the party ("All the Lonely People" was originally published more than 20 years ago), but I enjoyed the novel and the two essays at the end. Protagonist Harry Devlin is a likable chap, fiercely committed to the truth though not extremely bright. The Liverpool setting of the 1990s is well realized, and the plot is tightly constructed. Toward the end of the novel my interest in the mystery waned, but this isn't unusual for me: I rarely care about whodunit. It's how the author builds toward the reveal that matters.I also recommend "Yesterday's Papers," #4 in the series by the prolific Mr Edwards..

All the Lonely People Martin Edwards 9781848584525 Books Reviews
This is a different type of mystery book. The hero is not tall, handsome and perfect - or rich. The villains are not overdone. I have not finished this book yet, and I still have no idea who the murderer is. Just plenty of theories. The story is keeping my attention although I do not quite see why Harry is so totally committed to find his wife's killer. You will understand this statement when you read this, the first book in the Harry Devlin series.
After having read all of his previous books, this one was disappointing.. I think Edwards was anxious to move on to new characters
I enjoyed this book very much. I thought it was a slow start but the last half of the book moved along at a quick pace. I'm looking forward to reading more Harry Devlin capers.
This is the first book in the Harry Devlin series. (I am looking forward to the others). Martin Edwards' writing is wonderful - witty, trenchant, cynical. If you haven't read one of his books, start here or with the first of his Lake District series.
This is a really strong novel, especially considering it's a debut. You can get the plot summary elsewhere, but let me say that Edwards is especially good handling his characters, mainly the quietly determined Harry Devlin and his flighty estranged wife. The city of Liverpool really springs to life as well. I greatly enjoyed the book and will read more.
I enjoyed the setting of Liverpool. It was a different setting and mindset than the usual London environment. This author seldom misses and this is a good read. Harry is a flawed and human person who I think most readers will relate to in his struggles
One of the more interesting features of this book is that it is set in Liverpool, England, enabling the American reader, at least, to gain some insight into a different part of England. The main character is a barrister who turns sleuth to look into an old crime. The characterization is creditable and sympathetic and the story unfolds at a satisfactory pace.
